For Sydney, creating a better-for-you snack out of sorghum just came naturally. The origins of her business can be traced all the way back to her childhood on the Chasin family farm.
“The family farm was a magical place for me that inspired innovation and creativity from the simplest of things,” Sydney said. “I've been gluten-free since I was seven years old, and my mom and I have been crafting and snacking on alternative ingredients for as long as I can remember.”
Looking at existing snacks on the market, Sydney always wondered why the “delicious stuff” was packed with unhealthy ingredients, while the more healthy snacks were “boring and bland.”
“I was really inspired by my own gluten-free journey and wanted to make something that was not just a better-for-you snack, but also something that brings the fun back to snacking,” Sydney said.
On her journey to creating a fun and healthy snack, Sydney began experimenting with an often overlooked grain—Sorghum.
Sorghum is a 10,000-year-old ancient grain. While sorghum is primarily used in animal feed, its use is growing in the consumer food industry. This grain is also naturally gluten-free, drought-resistant, and non-GMO.
Through her experimentation with sorghum, Sydney was able to create a unique snack that mimics a common corn snack—Crunchy Ancient Grain Puffs.
In 2018, Sydney launched Chasin’ Dreams Farm. The brand’s Crunchy Ancient Grain Puffs come in a variety of flavors, including Cheddar, Sour Cream & Onion, Barbeque, and Sriracha.
“Our snacks are crafted to taste as close to junk food as possible,” Sydney said. “They're really punchy in flavor and indulgent, but they’re also a clean label made with avocado oil.”
Sydney says that Chasin’ Dreams Farm products have been well-received by both junk food and health food lovers alike.
“It's been exciting because our products please both sides,” Sydney said. “I’ll have customers who like Cheetos and junk food, but they still love our product for the indulgent flavor. And then, on the health food side of things, there are customers who love the clean label and really appreciate that we're using 100% sorghum as our base instead of adding fillers like rice and corn.”
Chasin’ Dreams Farm is a Woman-Owned Business that practices regenerative farming. Regenerative farming with sorghum provides a number of environmental benefits, including increasing soil biodiversity and protecting against erosion.
“It sounds cliche, but there have been so many times in the past that I've not trusted my gut and regretted it down the road,” Sydney said. “Founder intuition is one of the most magical things in the world, and it makes every entrepreneur special in their own way.”
